Event Overview

The Africa and the Middle East Conference was well attended and commenced with a pre-conference dinner on Monday the 27th November, with FW de Klerk being the Guest of Honour and after dinner speaker.

Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool officiallly opened the conference on Tuesday the 28th of November, and said that "the time was right for a major convergence between Arabs and Africans." He also said that Arabs were welcome in South Africa and would feel particularily at home in Cape Town, which was a springboard for investments into Africa.

Deputy Reserve Bank Governor Dr Xolile Guma said the inflation rate in most African countries was about 10% and declining, a dramatic improvement compared with 50% in 1994.

Istithmar Leisure, a subsidary of Dubai World, the conglomerate which has invested in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, was represented by the CEO, David Spencer, who said that the company intended to invest more in South Africa and throughout the rest of the continent.
Dubai World Company Nakheel Hotels & Resorts CEO James Wilson, who spearheaded the R7bn acquisition, said that he believed South Africa's foreign tourist arrivals were low in international terms although it had some of the best tourism assets in the world, such as mountains, coastlines, winelands and golf courses. "South Africa has huge, largely untapped investment potential," he said.

Foreign Affairs Department Chief Director for the Middle East, Johann Marx, noted that South Africa's trade with the region had grown from about R5,6bn in 1994 to R56,13bn last year.
