The
Cape
Argus in an editorial on 12 September 2005
under the heading “Oust the amateurs” wrote of the state
of soccer and rugby:
“For those who truly love sport – as opposed to
those who see it only as another opportunity for material gain
– the temptation to meddle in the affairs of soccer and
rugby must be almost overwhelming.
The reason is that a solution to the crises facing both
sports is obvious to everyone.
Everyone, that is, except the people running those
sports.
There is a need, in both cases, for an honest,
independent appraisal of the problems; the appointment of a
strong executive authority with clear lines of responsibility;
and the establishment of a board, made up of people with
impeccable credentials, to oversee it all.”
The editorial continues:
“Both sports have inherited an antiquated system of
governance from an amateur era.
Sport at this level is as much a business today as gold
mining or manufacturing, although more appealing.”
The
Argus
is writing about soccer and rugby but its comments have a much
wider application. In fact, there are problems of
organisation and management in most sporting fields in South Africa. It is against this background that Omega, in
association with the specialist sport company In-Site
Sport, are organising this conference on the
administration of sport. South African sport is fast
losing international credibility because of the problems
identified by The
Argus. Together with In-Site
Sport, we are tackling these issues with the certain
support of almost everybody involved in sport – the players
themselves, the fans, and the backers and sponsors. Of
course, a one-day conference is not going to solve the
problem. But correctly conceived and with the right
participants, it could point strongly in the right direction.
