The
conference, which was the first of its kind, was the initiative of
the Acting Singapore High Commission in South Africa but
it was being independently organised by Omega Investment Research
(Pty) Ltd.
By
way of background, the conference was being supported by the Singapore
government and Singapore businesses. It was also
supported by the South African High Commission in Singapore
as well as the South Africa-Singapore Business Association.
Of particular interest was the South African Minister of Trade
& Industry, Alec Erwin’s participation in the event.
This
therefore was a high-level event with two essential thrusts: firstly,
to promote Singapore as the access point to South East Asia for
African-based businesses; and secondly, to promote
Singapore investment into certain selected economic sectors in
Southern Africa.
The
conference therefore has helped profile Singapore-South Africa
relations which are poised to move to a new level.
While Government-to-Government agreements help lay the
ground for stronger co-operation, it is the participation of the
private and business sector that will determine the success of
such co-operative arrangements.
