The
annual Tourism and the Western Cape conference was held at
Zevenwacht Wine Estate on the 25th September
2001. The
conference was initiated by Cape Chamber of Commerce and
Industry and was sponsored by Hertz,
Grant Thornton Kessel Feinstein, ACSA and Business
Partners.
The
conference generated excellent discourse from both a policy
making and practical standpoint,
with both governmental bodies and private companies
presenting at the conference. The conference was an
excellent platform for the exchange of views and produced
very lively debate between speakers and delegates.

In
association with:
Cape
Chamber of
Commerce and Industry
|
Minister
Leon Markovitz set the tone for the day by introducing the
Joint Marketing Initiative and establishing the governments
strategy for the development of tourism in the Western Cape.
Mr.
David Gant of Parallel Media, showed delegates a very
practical example of how tourism, and more specifically
events, can generate huge return on investments.
The Volvo Ocean Race is set to deliver a 20 times
return on the initial investment. In terms of
marketing the Western Cape internationally,
this event is by far the cheapest and most successful
means of targeting an international audience.
(It is the third most watched sporting event in the
world).
The
highlight of the conference was Mr. Raymond Ackerman’s
passionate plea for Cape Town to host the Olympic Games in
2012. He stated
that he would not be able to be involved but his enthusiasm
and support for Cape Town definitely captured the
audience’s attention as a vote turned out in favour of a
bid.
What
some delegates had to say:
-
Good
variety of topics; some informative, some practical.
-
Knowledgeable
speakers. Effective facilities and aids. Punctual
start. Good chairmen.
-
Very
good speakers in general - some outstanding. A
good overall survey of many aspects of Tourism and the
need for its expansion. Very informative and
awakened awareness of many tourism issues.
-
Quality
of speakers and wealth of statistics and information
provided.
-
The
presence of Mr Raymond Ackerman and his frankness and
passion. Mr David Gant's presentation was also a
highlight.
-
Positiveness
by leaders in the industry. Excellent speakers.
Omega
would like to thank the Chamber for their involvement in the
conference and also all the speakers for their valuable
contributions.
Many
thanks to our fantastic sponsors for all their support:
