Between
14 and 17 June, Omega organised a South African business
mission and workshop in Ramallah,
Palestine
. This was a follow-up to a similar initiative which we
organised in Tel Aviv in January 2005. A variety of
businesses were represented in the mission and from all
accounts several companies made good contacts which could lead
to transactions. The conference was organised in
association with The Palestinian Trade Centre and with the
South African Embassy in Ramallah. While the primary
thrust of the mission was commercial, the South Africans were
conscious that they were promoting the possibility of
South Africa
playing a role in the emerging peace process between
Palestinians and Israelis – given
South Africa
’s track record of reconciliation and conflict resolution.
The mission, however, acknowledged the complexity of the
Palestinian situation. Creating a viable Palestinian
state is obviously going to be extremely difficult. But
this, clearly, in the view of the organisers is essential if
political
stability is to be reached in that part of the world.
