Investment Research took a South African business mission to
Amman, Jordan from 9 – 12 May 2005.
Mission
members from 19 South African companies departed Johannesburg
on Saturday, 7 May and arrived in Amman on Sunday morning.
This
important four-day event started on Monday with a conference
that focused on the business opportunities that currently
exist between South Africa and the Middle East and was
keynoted by Ambassador Boy Geldenhuys, South African
Ambassador to Jordan, Sheikh Alsayed A.K. Al-Abed,
leading Iraqi figure and Chairman of the Middle East
International Corporation, Sihle
Shange,
Director of North Africa and the Middle East for the South
Department of Trade and Industry, as well as and H.E. Mr.
Amin Husseini, Secretary General of the Jordan Chamber of
Commerce.
A
total of 80 delegates attended the conference from respective
Middle Eastern Companies. The conference focused on creating a
networking opportunity for the businesses represented, and
also laid a platform for future trade between South Africa and
the Middle East.
The
highlight in the proceedings was the announcement of the SOUTH
AFRICA-IRAQ CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The delegates at the
conference were made honorary members.
Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday was set aside for mission members to
meet on an individual basis with Middle Eastern businesses. We
believe that many important relationships were established
during the meetings, that will lead to transactions.
