Event Overview

Omega held it’s third annual conference in London on Tuesday, 18 October 2005.  The focus this year was on New Developments, New Sources of Funding and New Opportunities; and the conference focus was genuinely and widely representative of Africa.  This full-day event was hosted by Denton Wilde Sapte, the London law firm with the most intense and extensive interest in mining in Africa.

Why Africa?
Africa is the world’s treasure chest of natural minerals.  Moreover, as David Hale points out in his overview of African mining, conditions have never been better for investing in mining in Africa.

Why London?
London has for decades been the source of mining investment in Africa and in recent times, investors on AIM have demonstrated an exceptional willingness to invest in mining companies in Africa.

This was a genuinely Pan-African conference covering mining in 16 African countries and themes of the conference included:

  • Developments in Zambia, the DRC and Tanzania

  • Mozambique – increased stability and the emergence of a relatively stable framework for resource development

  • Angola – a new legislative framework and opportunities for new licenses

  • Botswana – beneficiation and new spin-offs in the diamond industry

  • Zimbabwe – some surprising developments

  • Prospects for gold

  • New sources of off-shore funding – Toronto and Perth come to Africa, and AIM’s involvement grows

  • China’s role in African mining

This clearly made for a very interesting and worthwhile event.

Who attended?
Bearing in mind that the purpose of this event was to bring together companies in search of investment and investors, attendees included miners, explorers, brokers, bankers, financiers, investors, media houses and mining service industries.
