Conference Summation

The Corporate presentation on 16^th October 2002 at the Armourer’s Hall drew around 70 delegates from a very wide cross section of seriously interested people in mining and in mining investment. This “spread of attendees” as one person has commented, “was excellent as too often these sorts of events tend to be dominated by producing companies. The presence of investment companies presenting an alternative view was very useful”.

The presentation was kicked off by Premier Manne Dipico who enthusiastically described the mining position of the Northern Cape. Three companies gave specific presentations: Matie von Wielligh of Kumba gave a most comprehensive presentation of where Kumba stands and what its plans are; Charles Mostert of Majestic Resources (an Australian listed company with diamond interests in the Northern Cape) provided frank insight into their capital-raising plans; and Phillip Kenny gave a very professional account of Firestone Diamond’s present performance and future plans. Interestingly, all these speakers touched on the recent mines and minerals legislation in South Africa and the mining charter – proving the relevance and topicality therefore of the other two speakers, namely Gloria Serobe, Chief Executive Officer of WipCapital and Jack Jones, Executive Director & Head of International Mining Research of CIBC World Markets – who gave different perspectives on the mining charter and the minerals legislation.

By all accounts, this forum was highly successful and the choice of the Armourer’s Hall has been applauded by most of the delegates.
