Following
a number of highly successful events in London, Singapore,
Johannesburg, Amsterdam and Brussels, the Global Gold,
Diamonds and Precious Metals Forum was the first
mining investment conference of this scale ever held in
Germany.
Germany,
historically not a major mining investment centre despite a
considerable financial sector, has however responded very
enthusiastically to this one-day event. Over 100 delegates
(excluding speakers) mainly representatives of private and
investment banks, fund managers, financial advisors, asset
managers and private investors attended the conference,
exceeding the expectations of both organisers and
participants. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from
delegates, speakers and sponsors has encouraged Omega to
schedule a follow-up conference for 2003.
High-profile
speakers representing large gold, silver and platinum mining
companies, junior miners, precious metals funds, highly
specialised mining analysts and the German investment
community came together at this forum to discuss the
prospects of precious metals and diamonds taking the state
of the world economy and other factors into consideration.
Special
mention should be made of the presentations by Bernard
Swanepoel, Chief Executive of Harmony Gold Mining Company,
and Ian Cockerill, President and CEO of Gold Fields, both
attracted much interest from the German investment
community. The two South African “heavy weights” were
able to present a very encouraging picture of investing in
gold backed by their strong corporate performance in recent
years. Agreeing on a bright outlook for gold in 2003, both
presenters predicted that the gold price will rise to over
$350 an ounce next year.
