Why Toronto?

Toronto is today the world’s leading mining and investment centre.
To illustrate:

  • 45% of the world’s equity capital raised for mining companies was for TSX and TSX Venture-listed companies.
  • Mining companies raised more than twice as much equity capital on TSX and TSX Venture than on any other exchange in the world.
  • TSX-listed companies operate 235 producing mines, 61 of which are in Africa (the continent with the largest share).
  • In 2003, the trading value of TSX mining shares was US $78 billion.
  • 62% of operating mines held by TSX-listed companies are outside of North America .
  • The Toronto Investment Community understands the mining business.
  • Canadians have a strong culture of owning common shares, and institutional investors understand mining.
  • Canada is known for setting high standards in the regulatory and disclosure area, which have been adopted around the world.
  • The TSX Group mining market has an abundance of skilled junior explorers with access to capital to stimulate new discoveries.

Why at This Time?

“Senior gold mining companies have enjoyed a significant run-up in share prices.  We believed a major uplift in junior mining stocks, which traditionally lag the seniors, was unfolding.” – Paradigm Research Team

Conference Objectives

As organisers, our main objective was simple.  It was to bring together parties in the mining industry who, in different ways, need each other, and so create a high-powered networking platform in what is undoubtedly the world’s leading mining investor centre.

We believe the timing was also right for this investment initiative.

  • There clearly is a worldwide resurgence of investment interest in natural resources and mining.
  • Global markets in respect to precious metals have re-focused attention on the value of both long-term and portfolio investment in these metals.
  • China’s robust growth has created unparalleled demands for all kinds of minerals and metals, and will ensure that commodity prices remain high through 2004 and 2005.
  • The dynamic changes which have taken place in South Africa have opened up new and specific opportunities for investors on the producer’s side.
  • Africa ’s potential as the resource continent is recognised globally.
  • More than anywhere else, there is a growing interaction between Canadian and African mining interests as is evident from the fact that more TSX-listed companies operate in Africa than on any other continent.
