After
the Wednesday event in Mumbai the IDC and Omega/Sakaza team
moved onto New Delhi for the conference of Friday the 11th
May 2001.
As
Mumbai was an eye-opener for the delegation from South
Africa - so was New Delhi.
A
city very much different in character from that of Mumbai,
New Delhi neveretheless moves at the same frenetic pace. The
impact of air pollution, to which the Minister for the
National Capital Territory of Delhi, the Honourable Smt.
Sheila Dikshit referred to in the opening minutes of her
address, is accentiated by dry duststorms at this time of
the year and this resulted in us seeing the sun as no more
than a hazy dim orb in the sky - far removed from sunny
South Africa.
The
Maurya Sheraton hotel was an excellent and appropriate venue
for our conference.
More
narrowly sector focused than that of Mumbai, this conference
primarily provided cutting-edge insight to attending
delegates of opportunities that exist for Indian textile
organisations to set up JV's with the Industrial Development
Corporation of South Africa. Breakaway sessions were
facilitated for delegates from the Indian jewellery and
pharmaceutical/chemical sectors. Whilst Question and
Answer sessions reflected a desire to do business with South
Africa and the IDC. It was clear that delegates knew very
little of the opportunities and attractions offered - one
being that South Africa has the cheapest bulk
electrification cost in the world coupled to easy grid
access - without power interruptions a most important cost
and practical consideration in the textile industry.
As
with the Wednesday event - please also see that page for
feedback - a number of visits were undertaken by the IDC
delegation to various companies and organisations and much
potential has been identified for joint ventures and the IDC will be hard at work facilitating these opportunities.
